Frequently asked questions

Answers before you invest.

Detailed guidance on choosing, using and planning CCTV for your home, business or farm.

Choosing the right coverage

How do I know how many cameras my property needs?

Start with the areas you need to see clearly: entrances, driveway, side access, garden gates or outbuildings. A single wide camera may show movement without capturing useful detail. The right number depends on the property layout and the views you want, so camera positions should be discussed before a quote is finalised.

Is wired CCTV better than wireless CCTV?

A wired system is often a strong option where dependable connection and continuous recording are priorities, but it requires a suitable cable route and power plan. Wireless models may be practical in some locations, although Wi-Fi quality, power and recording options need checking. We can discuss the trade-offs for your property rather than assuming one type suits every site.

Can I view live cameras and recordings on my phone?

Many modern systems support an app for live view and playback. Remote access normally depends on the equipment, a working internet connection and secure account setup. Confirm the exact app, user access and available playback features for the system quoted.

Do CCTV cameras record continuously or only when motion is detected?

Depending on the system, recording can be continuous, triggered by motion or set to a schedule. Continuous recording may need more storage; motion recording can reduce storage use but needs careful settings. We can discuss what makes sense for the areas you want to monitor.

How long is CCTV footage kept?

There is no single retention period for every installation. It depends on recorder capacity, camera count, resolution, frame rate and recording settings. Ask for an estimated recording window for the proposed setup, and remember older footage may be overwritten automatically.

Will the cameras give a clear picture at night?

Night performance varies with the camera, viewing distance and available light. Infrared and low-light features can help, but a camera that looks sharp in daylight may perform differently after dark. Tell us which areas matter overnight so suitable lighting, placement and equipment can be considered.

Can CCTV help protect a driveway or parked vehicle?

A camera positioned for the driveway can help you check activity around parked vehicles and review an incident later. The useful result depends on angle, distance, lighting and any obstructions. CCTV works best alongside locking the vehicle and keeping valuables out of sight.

Can you cover a farmyard, gate or detached shed?

Farm properties often need views across wider areas and may have limited power or internet at an outbuilding. We can discuss the gate, yard and storage areas you want covered, then assess what type of camera connection and recording arrangement is suitable for that layout.

Can CCTV be installed for a shop or business?

Yes, we discuss CCTV needs for shops, offices and other commercial premises. Entrances, key working areas and recording access should be planned around the way the premises operates. Businesses should also consider their responsibilities for signage, access to footage and retention.

How the system works

What happens if my internet goes down?

It depends on the equipment. A system with local recording may continue recording while internet access is unavailable, but phone viewing and cloud features may stop until the connection returns. Confirm how the specific system in your quote behaves when offline.

What happens if there is a power cut?

Most cameras and recorders need power, so they may stop operating during an outage unless a suitable backup power arrangement is included. If continuity during power cuts is important, mention it when requesting a quote so the options can be discussed.

Will the system alert me when it detects movement?

Motion notifications are available on many systems, but the exact features depend on the chosen model. Alert zones, sensitivity and schedules can help reduce notifications from passing traffic, trees or animals. Alerts are a useful feature, but they are not the same as a staffed monitoring service.

Do I need a monthly subscription?

That depends on the chosen equipment and storage arrangement. Some locally recorded systems may have no mandatory cloud-storage subscription, while certain app, cloud or advanced features can involve ongoing charges. Any expected recurring costs should be checked before you choose a system.

Will CCTV prevent a break-in?

No camera can guarantee that a crime will not happen. Visible, well-placed CCTV can be part of a wider security plan and may help you check events or provide footage afterwards. Strong locks, lighting and sensible routines remain important.

Can cameras face the road or a neighbour’s property?

Camera placement should focus on the areas you need to protect and consider the privacy of neighbours, visitors and people in public areas. The rules depend on how a system is used and what it captures; for specific privacy obligations, consult the Irish Data Protection Commission. We can discuss angles and privacy settings during planning.

Can I save footage if something happens?

Many recording systems allow clips to be exported, but the method and file format depend on the recorder or app. If easy playback and export are important to you, tell us before selecting equipment. Save relevant footage promptly before automatic overwriting.

Installation and enquiries

How long does an installation take, and will cables be visible?

The time and cable route depend on the number of cameras, building construction, access and whether a recorder or network equipment is needed. A tidy route can be discussed in advance. We would confirm the proposed scope and practical installation details in the quote.

Can you upgrade or add cameras to an existing system?

Possibly. Compatibility depends on the existing recorder, camera type, wiring, available channels and the age of the equipment. Send us the make and model if you have them, along with photographs of the current setup, and we can discuss whether an upgrade is practical.

Do you install every brand mentioned in the systems guide?

The guide introduces names Irish homeowners may recognise; it does not mean we supply or install every listed product. Brand, model, availability and installation scope are confirmed when we discuss your quote.

Which parts of Munster do you cover?

Clear View Security is based in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, and serves Limerick, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford. Send the property location with your enquiry so we can confirm availability for the job.

What details should I send for an accurate quote?

Tell us the property type and location, the doors or areas you want covered, whether you need mobile viewing, and any concerns about night-time footage, power or internet. Photographs or a rough sketch of the building and entrances can help with the first discussion. Call 087 354 7158 or use the contact form.
